Executive Director’s Corner November 2019

I hope everyone has had an outstanding semester, now that we are nearing the end of the calendar year. Things have been busy as usual in the ISPP Central Office since our return from Lisbon, with preparations and planning for our upcoming conference in Berlin, and looking ahead to conferences in 2021-2023. We value your feedback via our post-conference surveys, and consider it all carefully and incorporate changes to improve the conference each and every year.

The submission deadline of 1 DECEMBER 2019 for Berlin is almost here! At this time we do not expect an extension, so please plan your submissions accordingly. We continue to refine our submission process each year in an effort to make it a positive experience for everyone. Stay updated on all of the 2020 conference details on www.ispp.org/meetings.

PLEASE BE SURE TO ONLY USE THE INFORMATION AND LINKS POSTED ON ISPP’S WEB SITE AND IN E-MAILS DIRECTLY FROM ISPP. We are aware of one or two third-party sites that have listed our conferences along with some links for lodging, and not all of the information about the conferences on those sites is accurate. We cannot control the content on the third-party sites, so use information and links on those sites at your own risk. The information on ISPP’s web site and in e-mails directly from ISPP is the only OFFICIAL information about the conference, membership, our publications, etc., and all of our e-mails come from an ispp.org e-mail address and feature the ISPP logo. If you are ever uncertain about the origin of an e-mail that claims to be from ISPP, you can always e-mail the Central Office directly to inquire.

Speaking of e-mails, here are some notes regarding e-mail maintenance:
  • September through January marks a period of time when many people’s memberships are up for renewal. Please make certain to keep your e-mail address in your ISPP profile updated (we recommend using an e-mail address that will not change with new employment or graduation), and ensure that ‘ispp.org’ is indicated as an acceptable/approved sender in your e-mail so that messages from us are not blocked or flagged as spam (NB: It has come to our attention that Yahoo and Gmail now block ‘ispp.org’ e-mails if not on your approved sender list). This will allow your membership renewal notices and other communications from ISPP (such as when conference submission and registration become available) to reach you, and for you to continue to enjoy free online access to ISPP’s journals. You can update your details any time by logging into the Member Portal.
Last but certainly not least, be sure to also check our Future Meetings page for upcoming information on our 2021 and (soon) 2022 meeting locations, planned to be Montreal, Canada and Santiago, Chile. Details on 2022 will be posted on that page as soon as a venue contract is signed. We anticipate the conference in 2023 to be in Athens, Greece. The Future Meetings page will always have as much definitive information as possible on our meetings farther into the future.
Reminders:
  • The nomination process for the 2020 awards presented at the Annual Meeting is underway! Nominations are due from mid-December 2019 to mid-January 2020, depending on the specific award. If you want to nominate someone, please see our web site under “Awards” for details and contact information for each award’s committee.
  • ISPP will not be taking proposals for new small grants for 2020.
If anyone has any problems with any aspect of their membership or renewal, or the submission process for the 2020 conference, please do not hesitate to contact us in the Central Office. Thank you all for your membership, and have a wonderful academic year!

Sincerely,
Sev

Call for the New Twinning Program
Dear Colleagues,

I hope you might give some thought in the coming weeks and months to volunteering as a faculty partner in our twinning program at ISPP. As you may have heard, the program connects scholars in safe and established programs with colleagues who have been threatened or displaced as a result of political persecution. These partnerships can be a vital lifeline for threatened scholars, helping them to continue their scholarly career even while their professional positions and livelihood are limited. If you would like to serve in this type of role, both for the intellectual possibilities and simply to play a part in advancing academic freedom around the globe, please do not hesitate to apply here.

Sincerely,

Nick Valentino
ISPP President

Call for the New Twinning Program
The twinning program aims to facilitate scholarly collaboration between threatened political psychologists and the program partners. These collaborations can offer the opportunity for threatened scholars to continue their academic activities, maintain and advance their careers, and integrate into international political psychology; furthermore, partners can engage in political advocacy on behalf of threatened scholar.

ISPP's Scholars under Threat Fund

ISPP is committed to keeping colleagues in Turkey connected to the international community of political psychologists. You can help by donating to the ISPP Scholars under Threat fund through this link.

The funds may also be used to cover research costs to conduct research in Turkey, covering travel and living expenses to visit colleagues and universities outside Turkey to collaborate for research, and to organize for foreign scholars to travel to Turkey to conduct joint research to support applicant’s scholar activities (foreign scholars are expected to have their own research funds, but additional funds can be sought to keep local scholars research active or for capacity building). Applications from prior recipients are welcome.

CURRENTLY APPLICATIONS FOR EMERGENCY RELIEF ARE GIVEN PRIORITY.

Funding applications are capped at $1,000 USD for emergency relief.

ISPP's Executive Committee has designated the Scholars Under Threat Committee to assess applications and make the funding decisions. All applications will be kept confidential. Please click here for the application form.

Please return the application form to the ISPP Central Office.

Several sister organizations generously offered support by sharing ISPP's call for donations among their membership.

Special Issue in The International Review of Social Psychology: Social psychological and intergroup underpinnings of political apologies

Guest Editors: Theofilos Gkinopoulos (University of Greenwich, United Kingdom), Juliette Schaafsma (University of Tilburg, Netherlands) and Thia Sagherian-Dickey (University of Tilburg, Netherlands)

With this special issue, we greet ongoing quantitative and/or qualitative research on the intergroup nature of public apologies and the inter-group relations they entail. We seek to understand the political relations that are formed when political – as ‘ethical’ – leaders offer apologies and how this impacts their followers’ perceptions and judgements about them. Consistent with the scope of the Journal, we welcome research using a wide range of methodologies, regular research articles, short research notes, theoretical pieces or confirmatory reports. | More information
