October 2019
President's Corner

Dear Colleagues,

I am excited to serve you and ISPP this year as President. I have been a member of this interdisciplinary organization for nearly 25 years, and it has been one of the most important places for me to share work and meet others interested in the dynamic psychological processes underlying many of the great political challenges facing our world. Our current historical moment is a daunting one, and thus it is an exciting time for our ISPP. We must therefore invest more energy than ever in building intellectual and scholarly collaborations in political psychology to solve the puzzles that currently threaten human rights, democratic norms, environmental security and economic stability around the world.

This past July we met in Lisbon, Portugal for one of the largest annual gatherings of the ISPP in its storied history. Papers delivered there are still receiving media attention for the alarms they raised about threats to democracy that were once far more theoretical but today are very real. I was deeply struck by how many of you- from the most distinguished and award winning senior scholars to the first time graduate student researchers- gave impassioned presentations, urgent in your attempt to raise our sights to big theoretical challenges but deeply grounded in empirical evidence and scientific observation.

The Lisbon meeting was a fantastic reminder that our scholarly Society is special for its dedication to taking concrete steps to protect democratic and intellectual freedom around the world. Our past presidents David Redlawsk and Eva Green have focused a great deal of attention on threats to academic freedom in Turkey, a place where hundreds of scholars have been persecuted, and many have been prosecuted, simply for speaking out about the need for basic human rights and continued energy to secure peace in their country. Statements by our colleagues from Turkey during David’s Presidential Address profoundly moved the audience of hundreds.

We have much more work to do together, and I am very proud to be a part of it next July in Berlin. It is an exciting world city, full of history that reminds us what can happen when democracies fail. This is, therefore, a moment we all must seize. We are uniquely positioned to help explain the present and perhaps even affect the future using theoretical tools developed over several decades in Political Psychology. Please join us in Berlin!

Sincerely,

Nick Valentino

ISPP is committed to keeping colleagues in Turkey connected to the international community of political psychologists. You can help by donating to the ISPP Scholars under Threat fund through this link.

It is possible to request funds for immediate emergency support for personal living needs. The funds may also be used to cover research costs to conduct research in Turkey, covering travel and living expenses to visit colleagues and universities outside Turkey to collaborate for research, and to organize for foreign scholars to travel to Turkey to conduct joint research to support applicant’s scholar activities (foreign scholars are expected to have their own research funds, but additional funds can be sought to keep local scholars research active or for capacity building). Applications from prior recipients are welcome.

CURRENTLY APPLICATIONS FOR EMERGENCY RELIEF ARE GIVEN PRIORITY.

Funding applications are capped at $1,000 USD for emergency relief.

ISPP's Executive Committee has designated the Scholars Under Threat Committee to assess applications and make the funding decisions. All applications will be kept confidential. Please click here for the application form.
