(Session Organizer) Jackie Abell, Lancaster University; (Discussant) Cristian Tileaga, Loughborough University; (Chair) Cristian Tileaga, Loughborough University

Conference: ISPP 2011
Affiliation: Lancaster University
Research Area: Political culture, identity, and language

All four papers in this session consider how language is used to legitimate some people as members of a national group and marginalize 'others'.    Three of the papers consider constructions of refugees or migrants.  The final paper examines the language of patriotism and nationalism, noting the consequences these have for attachment to a national group and the who is perceived as a legitimate member.
