Adopting qualitative and quantitative methods, all 4 papers in this panel examine how identity and associated political values are communicated in a public forum.  Two papers explore how the 'imagined' character of a nation (Portugal and the US) are communicated publicly; via the printed press and political speeches.  The other two papers focus on the rhetorical and communicative strategies adopted by the military and security forces in countering terrorism and recruiting personnel.
