The School of Social Sciences (SoSS) at Monash University is seeking to make a dual
appointment of Professor of Politics and International Relations and Head of School. The
successful candidate will be an outstanding scholar in the discipline of political science who
can demonstrate the capacity for leadership in research, pedagogy, administration and
Monash University is at the forefront of Australian higher education, a member of the elite
Group of Eight universities and a fixture in the top 100 of both the Times Higher Education
World University Rankings and QS World University Rankings. It is Australia's largest
university and has a global presence spanning four continents, with campuses in Malaysia
and South Africa, joint graduate schools in China and India and a centre in Prato, Tuscany.
Led by Professor Rae Frances, the Faculty of Arts is a powerhouse of teaching and
research. The SoSS is a big part of this story, with rankings consistently above world
standard, including a 4 for Political Science in the 2015 Excellence Research Australia
(ERA) exercise. Monash's research standing is shown by its success in attaining the top
ranking of 5 for nearly half of all its ERA fields.
The Head of School will be expected to sustain and enhance the SoSS's dynamic, collegial,
multidiscipline environment. A particular focus will be building, strengthening and maintaining
excellence within the team to facilitate collaborative teaching and research. These skills will
also be important outside the SoSS, with the Head of School expected to take part in
broader faculty strategic initiatives. The successful candidate will hold an ongoing
appointment as Professor of Politics and International and a threeyear
term as Head of School. Both appointments are fulltime and based at Monash's Clayton campus.
